QUESTION: What is Takeout Trivia?

Takeout Trivia is a an interactive online trivia game played for fun and prizes. We feature all kinds of trivia categories, including music, TV and movies, pop culture, and general knowledge.

The game is broadcast from St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. As the name suggests, to play, you just need to order takeout from a participating restaurant and join the game from home, or any place where you can connect to the Internet.

QUESTION: When is Takeout Trivia?

Takeout Trivia happens online every Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm and lasts approximately 90-minutes. If you can't join us right at 7pm, that's OK! We play four rounds of trivia and you can join anytime during the game.

QUESTION: How can I play?

Players access the game online either by typing in a web URL or scanning a QR code. Each weekly game has a unique web address and code.

To get an access code, order takeout from one of our participating restaurants in Niagara. Find a current list at our website. We are working to build a group of participating restaurants. If you have a favourite takeout place, tell them about us, or tell us about them – we’d love to connect and invite them to join the fun.

QUESTION: How much does it cost to play Takeout Trivia?

It is FREE to play Takeout Trivia, and you could win a prize!

QUESTION: What kind of prize could I win? How can I win?

Our participating restaurants offer gift vouchers as our game prizes. If you win, you can use your voucher at the issuing restaurant toward the purchase of takeout and play again on a future game, or, use anytime! We may, occasionally, also have other kinds of prizes to give away.

The number of prizes available each Wednesday depends on how many restaurants are taking part, but we will always have at least one prize to give away. When multiple prizes are available, we will award prizes for winning scores, but to keep the game fun and fair for everyone, we also give away our prizes by random selection - so you don't need to know lots of trivia to have a chance to win.

QUESTION: How does it work?

To play you will need:

At least one “viewing device” to view the game play
At least one “answering device” to join and play the game with
The QR code or web URL to access the game

Your viewing and answering devices can be computers, laptops, tablets, cell phones or any combination or these. Any web-connected device with a display should work. We sometimes have music, video or other audio clues, so you may need to turn up your sound.

Two or more players can share one viewing device. Players can each have their own answering devices, or play as a team on one device.

When it's time for the game to begin on Wednesday, simply access the game with the code, choose a player or team name and you're in! We will open the game site about 15 minutes early to give you time to get logged in and ready to play.

QUESTION: What is a "URL" and a "QR Code?"

A "URL" is another name for a website address, such as, "www.goodanswer.ca." It's the text you type into the address bar of your web browser (such as Chrome, Safari, Explore, Edge or Firefox) to take you to a website, or to a specific page on a website. Each week our game has a new, unique URL you will need in order to join.

A "QR Code" is a computer-generated image that you can scan using your cell phone camera to be taken directly to a particular URL instead of having to type the URL. It's a quick and convenient way to get to a webpage from your phone. You can practice by scanning the QR code to the left - it will take you to our Facebook page.

QUESTION: How long is the access code good for? Does it expire? What if I lose my code?

Each week we have a fresh trivia game with a new code. If you receive a code with your takeout order, it is good for the NEXT game only.

HINT: The best way to keep track of your code it to take a photo of it with your phone right away when you receive it. We hope you understand that we cannot take responsibility for lost game access codes, but if you do lose your code and cannot connect with the issuing restaurant to get a new copy, contact us via email or Messenger and we will do our best to help get you into the game.

QUESTION: Do I have to get takeout from a participating restaurant on Takeout Trivia day (Wednesday) to get the access code?

It depends! Each restaurant can set their own policy, but we encourage our partner restaurants to distribute the game codes with all their takeout orders, all week long.

We will try to post each restaurant's policy information on our website, but if you are not sure, please inquire directly with the restaurant.

QUESTION: Help! I lost connectivity or got bumped out of the game!

You should be able to re-join the game in progress simply by re-scanning the code or re-entering the web URL. The game is designed to remember you, so you should find that your round score is still waiting for you when you return to the game.

Remember: you can join in anytime while the game is in progress, so if you cannot make it for our 7:00 pm start, feel free to join the game in progress.

QUESTION: What if I don't live in Niagara or there are no participating restaurants near me, can I still play?

Yes! We would love to have you join, but since the idea is to support local restaurants by promoting takeout, we do ask a small fee for an access code if you are not purchasing from one of our partners. We use the funds to help cover the administrative costs of producing the game.

If you should happen to be one of our lucky winners and would like to donate your restaurant voucher back to the game to give a local Niagara resident a chance to win it, we would be happy to do that!
